Basically belt drives will not spin at a constant speed. (The motor is connected to the platter via a rubber "belt").
This rubber belt will slip and expand making beat matching really quite difficult.

Theres also a very low torque which makes "start up" times slow (you can hear the record winding up as you release it) so you have to give it a gentle shove.
However, I always stand by the fact that they are good to learn on because you HAVE to work hard at your mix. If you can mix on belt drives you can mix on anything. Let the flames begin! :-)

I started on belt drive, they are ticky, and the transition from belt to direct is quite hard at first. Like Underpants says, they are good to learn on.

just replace the belts often and try and get slightly smaller belts this will give a slight increse in torque and if you make the surfaces that the belts touch rough again there will be a little more increse in performance
good luck i started on belts and it is the way i can play a whole vinyl with the power of and mix it into another just with my finger because i owned belts
keep it going

You're going to be well off learning to mix on belts. It teaches you to always mix on your feet. Once you get on some directs then you are going to be a very strong DJ.
