So this is just a general information topic...
what steps and processes would you have to go through to get something released?
How does the buisness work?
What software do most producers generaly use? .. protools.. cubase?

oh dude... I'd do come searches before asking all that..

Work on your tracks before even thinking about business stuff. Most software is good.. I use Logic on mac, but most people don;t these days. Just get whatever you can afford and go for it :)

You mean like mastering a finished track?? Take it to a studio dude. As a general rule it's not a good idea to master your own tracks. If you're just doing something for fun, run it through some waves plugs like L1 to bring up the level. (Obviously don't do this if you intend to take it to be mastered somewhere else :P )

I feel to master tracks well, some sort of Knowledge on how to achieve decent enough results and not to detract from the overall production is needed. A decent ear, confidence in your studio monitors/acoustics and decent tools for the job.
Are you getting aceptable mixdowns straight out of Cubase?
If not mastering wont really help.
Mastering a tune for CD duplication is the final piece and is only really used to bring the overall level up, iron out small dips/peaks in the tonal shape of the track, maybe compression to hold things together, but these are only used if the track needs them.
When mastering is done in view for a vinyl release is done to try to get best results for the pressing process, and should be well left alone unless you have sufficiant skills, experience and decent sounding gear.

Regards getting something released send of your material to any label you feel will be interested in your style. Give tracks to Dj's who play out regular to gauge interest. Be carefull who you can trust with your material as CD's are easy to misuse
You never know someone may like your stuff

Here... This will help!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onemusic/management/

Have a good browse... and don't just read, take it all in!!! lol
Also, Make sure you have a look trough the "legal" part!

p.s.
Pro Tools is the industry standard in recording studios!
Cubase is the industry standard in production studios!

For Electronic Dance Music, Cubase is your best bet!
But every interface is different... some sequencers are better at doing other things then others... its all down to personal prefrence! Try around a few diffirent ones and see which suits you best (you can normally download trail sofeware of certain ones)

Don't forget Logic is widely used too, with good results to be had.
I feel that its not so much what other ppl use thats the main decision in what platform to use, more like you say use what best suits the way you work
