This is something that i know that I'll never be really good at, mediocre at best. But its still something that I want to be able to [honestly] say that I know how to do, maybe it'll be a neat party trick. Well, also, because two of my friends and I started a fake band, but then I started doing stuff in FL/Acid and I want to be able to 'perform' (not spin my own stuff, because it sucks). So I was thinking of picking up a set of used/refurbished turntables/cdjs, because my budget is pretty low (~1k, i'm 17 years old). The thing is, that I don't know a thing about what makes an $80 turntable different from a $200 turntable. Or what to look for in a mixer. Or if I want to get a turntable at all. I was thinking that since I probably will sell the stuff later (maybe a year or two from now) would I want to get a cdj, so that I don't have a bunch of vinyls laying around? (And then I wont have to pay for shipping, just the $.99 or whatever for a track?) But then those CDjs are a lot more expensive. And then I was thinking I could use that scratchlive deal, but that's not exactly cheap either (but then I could do vinyls or cds...)
And then as far as mixers go... I really have no clue what to look for in a mixer. Not even how many channels I'd want. I've got a 2.1 setup here that I never use, so I figured I'd dedicate it to practicing, but they are kinda crappy speakers...

Basically, headphones/speakers aside, if you were looking for 2 turntables and a mixer for under 1000 (not to play in any clubs or anything), what would you get? (used is OK, unless you don't trust it or anything..)

I was kinda looking at those c.314's, but those are kinda pricey for two of them... but they look so cool though

Thanks alot for the help

For vinyl, you'll need to buy 2x turntable with direct drive (not belt drive) and a pitch control at a minimum, anything less and you wont be able to DJ.

I've been talking with some guys on another forum, but I guess it's nighttime in their timezone, because there havent been any replies in a while.
Basically, I need to know if I would be better off with a cdj deal or a turntable. Because I'm gonna be playing in my room, with some 2.1 speakers that have a 3.5mm (1/8") connector. So, I don't think I'll notice the difference in quality between 320k (and occasionally 192k) mp3s and vinyl. Do you think I will?
I was thinking about the stanton c.314's, with like a numark DM1050. Does that seem like a good idea? Or do you think I should go with vinyls? I'm just concerned about buying all the vinyls, when I could buy mp3's for 99c or whatever online. Plus then freebies are actually free :P and those stock dj tools would be cheap as well, but... if you think that the difference in quality would be noticable, then i guess I should go with vinyl afterall. What do you think?

Not sure what is better for you, there are pro's and con's to both formats, I suggest you go into a store and checkout some equipment, find out what you like better.

Worth mentioning that you can get a set of technics 1210s for about £350 second hand
i think bout $700 dollers, try ebay.
I know it is hardly the 'choice' for starter dexx but if it works for you and you decide to keep them then it saves you the hassle of replacing the 'starter dexx' a few years down the line
(anyone wanna buy my crappy kams!!!)
If you decide a few years down the line that the technics are not for you then stick em on ebay!!! The technics always attracts interest and youre sure to get your $$$ back

Im fairly new to the DJ scene, and I was in the same predicament as you a while back, that is, little money to spend, but still needing some decent equipment.

I found a load of stuff on Ebay, but it was all either in bad shape, or a little pricey. Dont knock Ebay off the list though, I would definitly give it a try. I eventually wound up talking with a buddy of mine who DJ's, and he had an old set of decks and a mixer that he sold to me very cheaply.

I ended up with a pair of Stanton STR8-80's and a Stanton SMX-251 mixer. These have served me well thus far, and while not top of the line, you can pick up the decks and the mixer for well under 1k.

Final bit of advice, ask people you know before you buy new. You never know who might know someone who can hook you up, or they might even be able to.

you basically get what you pay for. As silver said with vinyl tables you want direct drive instead of belt drive. In cdj terms you might get table with more Fx or better pitch resolution (tempo accuracy) as opposed to just paying for a really cheap alternative to either

For me, the deal breaker on buying CDj's before Vinyl was so that i could utilize this huge amount of music i have in CD format that i could use to mix with. works for me. everyone is different.

since you're just starting i'd suggest a simple 2-channel mixer. nothing too crazy. Pioneer, Rane, Numark just to name a few.

Yeah, I was looking at the numark DM1050
And I've been trying to find 2x cdj800's for under $1000, but that's kinda hard to do. How bad would it be to get 1 cdj800 and a c.314? I don't REALLY need the MP3 support, seeing as CD-R's are dirt cheap anyway. As long as I keep a tracklist with the CDs, it shouldn't be that bad.

check out this thread.
http://www.djforums.com/showthread.php?t=111528 314 review
http://www.djforums.com/showthread.php?t=110321 CDJ 200 vs 800

find out which one might suit your needs more and see if maybe you can decide on getting the same decks. but to answer your question, no it wont be a big deal if you have different tables. they all hook up to your mixer the same way :D

[sorry for the slow response, i've been out of town]

hmm, so I was thinking about getting a cdj800 or 1000, and then a stanton c.314, because I tried out the 1000's, and loved them. My only fear is that I'd gravitate toward using one table all the time, and not using the 314 very much. The guy at the guitar center said something about lower latency on the pioneer ones?

Both of those links were 404 by the time I got to them =( are they on another site?
