This site will help you to write chords if you need it: http://www.8notes.com/piano_chord_chart/

Like Buzz said just mess around until you find something that sounds right.

sweet harmony users one of the most clever of the chords and is very hard to hear how its played.
i have managed to do it and i have a midi file if you want check it out.
just open and import midifile into your sequencer and asign a piano sound to the channel
and have a look in the key editor to see how its played.

thanks underloop and thanks mortis, both very helpful!

also yes charlydup that would be great if i could have a copy of that! much appreciated! its so much easyer to understand when you can see it infront of you rather than have someone trying to explain it.how can i get my hands on it please?

also i have searched the internet for information on piano chords but theres some things i dont understand. for example if i was to make a riff with maj7 chords can i use ONLY maj7 chords in that riff ? or do other chords go together?

id like to get piano lessons but its a bit hard with the credit cruch and all

You don't really need piano lessons to understand it, just need to read up a bit on music theory.

Just go here: http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/piano/ (or google piano chords if you don't like that specific applet...I have a better one at home but I don't remember what it's called)

Gives you the notes in each chord, and you can also see scales.

When you have your chord progression decided, sticking to the notes in the chords you've picked is safe, but some notes will sound good anyways. Experiment and trust your ear (unless you have a bad ear).

dain-ja i have found that site before and have printed off some of the chords it is good.
but i still dont understand some things like:
can i mix different chord types together, or are you only supposed play notes of one chord in a riff?

i want to understand these things before trying to move on to scales.

i know music is about being original but i do want to know what the music theory is and i find the internet turorials iv found so far not easy to understand, like readin an instruction manual!

thanks for the help evryone!!

When you write a "riff" you want to stay in key. Each chord is part of a grander key. Meaning, don't stray out of that key. Once you progress musically you can begin to learn how to make a key change and stray out of key, but that's almost never touched or heard of in hardcore.

Basically what you want to do is have a "chord progression" in your track. Chord progression is what sets the "emotion" of your track.

I usually have 4 chords (they have to be in key though). So you'll have one bar in Cminor, then one in whatever, then one in something else then the last one in Cminor again for example. Just do that for each measure.
