Intel are waaaay ahead in the market. And their CPUs are kickass mate, go with an intel chip. They're also good bang for buck. :)

Yeah, when we say a CPU that's "better" for music production we mean that it can run more VSTs/VSTis. Intels are better at these kinds of calculations.

AMDs are KINDA better for gaming (FPS/$) but the new Intel i7 chips still whoop their ass.

AMD is better for gaming, I don't care what anyone says, AMD's are MADE for gaming, Intel is okay for gaming but good for number crunching and probably not bad for music production, I would say get a high-end Intel Core2duo and overclock that bish!

As long as you have a badass sound card it really doesn't matter which brand you get, as long as the CPU doesn't suck.

If you're looking towards overclocking I would recommend any Zalman heatsink

Well, the i7 is whooping the AMD chips in gaming benches these days too!

Until the i7, I'd agree.

Not having a complete shit video system helps too.

And no, not saying you should go and grab a GTX295 and a massive 30" monitor, my point is that, when working with DAWs it's not exactly great when you don't have much screen space.

even the shittiest video card will run 2d stuff like cubase fine

way better spending the money on multiple high res monitors

two 1080p 23 inchers would do nicely

Well, I use my laptop (14.1 but high res: 1440x900) and a 19" gaming LCD (1280x1024)

Far from ideal.

Please read my post again. That is not what I meant as I stated. I was saying that it's good to have a fair amount of screen space... i.e. editing in lower resolution such as 1024×768 isn't that fun.
