Hey guys,

I'm trying to produce a hardstyle track. I've never done this before however, and I'm at a loss of where to go next. I've got the beat down, it's slow but heavy, almost gabber-like. I'm not sure about the synths and bass, though. Should I make them melodic, or should I concentrate more on hardness? What is a good synth to use?

Thanks in advance, people

EDIT: And if it's any use, I'm using FL Studio.

depends really fella.. u can use anything aslong it sounds kinda open and sharp.. its about the effects u use on it.. as for FL Studio it has that standard synth thing in it.. cytrus or so i think ? didnt use it for ages.. but with the plucked or short synths in there + some efx u can do a lot of cool things ;) bpm wud say.. 165-170 .. as far i remember from playing hardstyle back in the days (yes for me its a past style :P dun like it no more once it got mainstream) it has a lot of kick parts and melody only in some areas .. later styled hardstyle became more melodical.. i'd say make a nice kicking intro with some stabs in it of your melody.. as ing.. 3 counts of ur melody.. wait another 5 counts and the repeat it.. 3 counts into ur melody.. 5 counts kicks.. build it up by reversing this.. 8 counts kicks.. then 5 counts melody.. 3 count kicks.. 8 counts melody.. little rest and maybe vocals then slide up the melody join the kicks nd so in.. bash into a full lead

either that or go for the scratchy kind .. harder for starting ppl.. need to work a lot wif the fruity slicer for that ;)

hope that helps u on ur way :)

my advice tho.. listen to a lot of hardstyle (best imho zany (razzia), technoboy (sex), dj marky (i want pussy), southstylers (e-town/pwoap), mc laren (non stop)

mc laren - non stop:<link removed cuz im not allowed to fileshare.. which i forgot rofl! woops>

Thanks a lot. I'm well on the way now =)

As it's my first hardstyle track, I'm just doing a remix of the Tetris theme. It's done too much, but I haven't got a lot of inspiration at the minute.

OK, this is a short demo of what I have so far:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TEYYZ4H3

The volume levels are a little off because I haven't mastered it yet, I'm not doing that until I have fully completed the track.

next time please www.speedyshare.com.. saves waiting time ^^

ite for so far my feedback:

clap:
put reveerb2 + delay bank 2, on the delay bank only give it a liiiiiiiiittle echo not to much.

kick:
put EQ2 on it or use an other kick.. needs to come out more more clear nd punchy

lead:
either lower the volume on it or pump the percussion up..

little idea for the intro:
on the first clap put the first note of the lead followed by a 2nd one 1 count after. ill explain in an 'sorta image'.

1: - . . . - . . . - . . . - . . .
2: - - . . - . . . - - . . - . . .

taking a 4x4 as example... clap + first lead note (say it is on c5) then add another one after on c5. then the leave 2 open spaces (- = note, . = open space). next row of 4 is clap + 1 lead then 3 open spaces. if u follow the feedback given above u have an echo on both clap and well u already have it on the lead .. for wot i heared. so itll fill the emptyness..

also what you can (try to) add is a bass in the start already:

sample: http://www.speedyshare.com/607792612.html

used standard FL stuff so shud work for ya...
yes if some might see it they think KEV WILLOW(youtube him altho hes not hardstyle)! yup :) brilliant guy imho this shud add something but.. u gotta try .. maybe bass wont by needed in ur tune try without first..

(open that zip by starting FL then file -> open -> select zip file and ur done :P)

yes u can open zip the normal way nd get my kick :p dun care .. if it helps go wif it hehe...

hope ya get wot i mean.. :) ur on a good way tho keep it up nd practice a lot :) dont be afraid to experiment with effects! .. those are the things that help ur tune to become something great ;)

melody is best. Focus on that.

hardstyle isn't as distorted as one might think. There's a bit of crunch, but the major is tone. I've heard plenty of hardstyle tunes barely even touch distortion.

You want to focus on balance, a nice tonal kick, and 'big' sounding sounds with lots of reverb but never messy.

Project-Industrial and Orbit1, you guys are brilliant. I modified the intro and put some reverb on the lead, bass and clap and the track sounds a hell of a lot better.

I'm making a few more small tweaks, and I'll upload another demo later.

OK here is the next demo of my track (on Speedyshare as requested):

http://www.speedyshare.com/876309562.html

As well as doing the things that have been suggested, I have also added a less abrupt outro.

Thanks a lot for your help, mate. I'm gonna concentrate now on making it a little longer and mastering it.
