So been unemployed for a few weeks and spent the last couple of days listening to all HU CD album mixes I have. Was wondering what everyone's favorite mixes are, not the whole album, but individual CD mixes in all of the HU series. I'm only asking for the CD mixes themselves, So that includes HU Vol 1-5, HU 2010, the 3rd CD on Marc Smith's artist album which is mixed, Gavin G's mixed CD on HU Breaks, and it can include the limited edition freebie mixes Ravin Eye, The Official Hardcore Heaven Awards, and HH Summer Madness CDs. No need to put them in any particular order or give reason if you don't want to, but it would be interesting to hear why you consider them your favorites. Also there's no limit to your favorites either.

Here's mine in no particular order:

Hardcore Underground 1 CD 3 Darwin & Cube::Hard
At first hearing this album I was really unsure of what I was listening to, until Fallout started playing and I was intrigued. Then Kill Belladona came on and I was hooked! First time ever hearing breakbeat/DnB hardcore and because of this mix I was completely hooked on the subgenre.

Hardcore Underground 2 CD 3 Darwin, Nu Foundation, and Arikitech
A lot of amazing tracks on this album, and everything flowed very well.

Hardcore Underground 3 CD 4 Darwin, CLSM and Nu Foundation
Same thing as the previous mentioned, a lot of amazing tracks but this also had much more diverse styles of hardcore.

Hardcore Underground 4 CD 1 Fracus & Darwin
Although not as eclectic as Darwin's previous mixes he's worked on, when these two are together producing or djing, it just sounds magical. This mix is no exception. A great tracklist, and overal spectacular mix from start to finish.

Hardcore Underground 4 CD 3 Al Storm & Kutski
This could possibly be my favorite mix of all time from the Hardcore Underground label, which is a bit surprising for two reasons. One, while I love Al Storm as a DJ and producer, none of the mixes he's been involved with in the series have really stood out as much as this one has. He has such an eclectic taste in music, and Kutski really has been the best to complement that variety in my opinion. And the other reason is the number of tracks. 31 tracks on one mix is completely insane, but I barely ever noticed. The mix flowed so great I hardly noticed how short some of the tracks were. It seems they managed to cover almost all aspects of hardcore. This mix is almost like a work of art to me.

Hardcore Underground 5 CD 4 AB & Douglas
While I really do like freeform, it's not a style of hardcore that I am completely in love with. Oli G and Lost Soul's mix on HU4 wasn't one that got a lot of play time on my end, but I come back to AB and Douglas' mix on an almost daily basis. They have an amazing track selection, and has a much more uplifting sound throughout the mix from start to finish. I've heard AB and Douglas play live twice and they were absolutely incredible. Even if the tracks on their album were not around at the time, I think if they both did the freeform mix on HU4 then that album would have easily been my all time favorite from HU.

I know there are a ton of mixes that I probably should have named such as the ones on HU2010, which I do love all 3 btw, the 2nd and 3rd mix on HU5, and at least one other one from HU 1-4, but I named these mainly because after all this time of being released I continue to go back to them.

Oli G & Lost Soul mix probably takes it for me.

Also love the Darwin, CLSM & Nu Foundation mix on HU3.

But then again they're all superb.

Oli G & Lost Soul mix followed by the Oli G & Lost Soul mix. If I had to pick a third, it would be the Oli G & Lost Soul mix.

Stand outs for me are:

Oli G & Lost Soul
Brisk & Ham
Slipmatt & Entity

But I love most of the mixes to be fair. :P

Fracus & Al Storm's mix on Hardcore Underground 2 is absolutely fcuking mustard. Has to be my favourite. It was actually the first Hardcore Underground album I bought. Hadn't heard of Hardcore Underground until I saw that album in HMV on the way to work one morning.

"That looks shiny. Got the word Hardcore in it as well. SOLD!".

I must confess I only own HU 5 and HU Breaks (which is still waiting for it's deflowering on my desk).
I pretty much liked the Fracus & Darwin Vs. Brisk CD.

Do yourself a huge favour and nab HU1 whilst you still can. From what I can gather there's only about 10 copies at distro then it's gone. CD1 is a tremendous "time capsule", presenting a definitive take on that "sound". CD3 hasn't dated at all, and IMO represents what any "compilation" mix should aspire too. Stunning that the entire album was made up entirely of rejects from other comps of the time!

HU4 would be a good second to pick up, although it's got pretty costly and difficult to do so.

Man that is insane. But not a surprise either as so many albums during that time were focused on the productions from the DJs actually mixing the album rather guaranteeing a spectacular sounding album.

I see some HU1 and HU 3 albums for less than 20 quid each on ebay and amazon, but definitely don't see any of HU2 and HU4 anywhere near that price. Well I'm glad I have an extra set of HU1-5 along with HU2010 and the 2 Fracus & Darwin albums nicely shrinkwrapped and preserved in case one of my originals ever gets scratched or misplaced :)

HU2 is available completely digitally on amazon, and it sucks that you aren't collecting any royalties on that one!

BTW when going through all of my albums I noticed that Al Storm has been on every of the HU volumes except for the first one (I know he's not on HU2010 but I always count that as a separate project from the HU series). Was he originally supposed to be in the 1st one as well, or is that something that started at 2?
