you could always try playing at lower dB and try mastering the mix afterwords. I hate it that transitions are usually 3 dB higher than the tracks I play

Ultimately, though, at some stage you're going to have to apply a limiter to do that. Limiting a blend of two tracks that are probably already compressed pretty hard is pushing it a bit. Don't get me wrong, I do limit off particularly high peaks but when I go too far I usually end up unhappy with the results.

I record at around -2db and make sure that nothing is going into the red on my mixer. Usually try to keep it right on 0db. I don't usually get big spikes to be honest during a mix. I think my style of mixing means that levels remain roughly the same. Will never have two basses together and use mids as well to always make sure that the next track coming in is dominant (but that is all stuff you already do).
But as Sami said, I apply a loudness pre-set afterwards. It doesn't give it much but there is a little boost. Loudness is nowhere near the be all and end all but it can help your mix stand out I think. Obviously the main thing is to maintain the quality of the recording. Any distortion and it will just sound shit.
