Seriously good stuff and a topic that definitely affects an array of djs.
PROMOTERS - TAKE NOTE!!
March 26, 2014 at 5:27am
More often than not, promoters contact me to play at an event, but instead of asking for availability, they ask 'What is my cheapest price?'. They dull the event down, saying numbers are low, times are bad, hitting me with every available sob story. I've fallen for it a number of times. By the time the flyer comes out, I see it's a full on blockbuster event in a small club, with 20 dj's back to back and 10 mc's to cover the acts. 90% of the time the event is rammed. Most of the time my lowered fee is due to the fact that I'm subsidising an overpaid headliner.
I always like to think I'm reasonable with promoters and have given out discounts more times than I can count, but this is not reciprocated, in fact it's just taking the piss. On top of this, it's very common to get 'knocked' another ?50 on the night due to 'low attendance'. The reality is, the attendance wasn't low, in fact the dancefloor was heaving. It's just that you've set yourselves a high break even point by having an outrageously expensive DJ line up!
This is unacceptable, you are contributing to the demise of the scene.
I have many friends who are promoters, and they've always been aware of my stand on huge line ups in small clubs. I don't like them. I think the idea of doing a 3 or 4 way back to back set is ludicrous. Whatever happened to letting the DJ play a 90 minute, 2 hour set and taking the crowd on a journey.. instead of a wham bam trio of dj's trying to pull the music in all different directions with no real coordination. Granted, sometimes it works, but not always.Whatever happened to putting on a couple of headliner DJ's, complemented by an array of local talent? This is the way things worked before, have times really changed that much!?
I'm not going to change the attitude of promoters with this piece of writing, but please, if you're going to call me for a booking, show a little respect. Don't undercut me before you call me. There's a growing attitude of "We have a couple of hundred pounds left, let's see who we can get on the flyer". Quantity over quality doesn't work.
Book me for my abilities, not to fill a blank space on an already busy flyer.
What's hilarious is that Klubfiller and Breeze shared the post, which is a bit funny because they are a bit of the problem as well.

He's bang on. Simple lessons there. Quality over quantity, dont over play your hand.
Never been a massive fan of b2b nights myself.

Well it depends on who it is :P
Some DJ's are better showcasing the tracks for an hour (or the 90 mins Scotty was on about), some work better in low quanitity. Now I don't have that much experience with actually going to many rave nights, but if I was a DJ, I would probably just stray to different styles if I where to play for too long :P

Dang, low-balling a legend like Scott Brown... now that's some bad karma.
I'm not too big on b2b either, I want to let the DJ play a nice long set and hear what they have to offer. It is about "taking the crowd on a journey", that's why some mixes are so damn boring where as other mixes you listen to over and over.

I never understood why it should cost more if the event was big, at the end of it, the job is the same regardless of club size... if it actually is because they are subsidising it then perhaps I should have a bit more faith in humanity :D

Just wanted to clarify that the last sentence was mine and not part of the whole post.
as far as the b2b goes, some DJs absolutely NEED it because most of the tracks and their own productions they play are so linear and repetitive it makes for an absolute boring and uninteresting mix. Some that come to mind are Klubfiller, Unknown, MOB, and maybe even Ramos. MOB sets rarely vary, with the exception of track order. klubfiller is such a shit DJ he needs someone to stabilize what would be a rather awful mix. unknown by himself is a complete bore of a DJ.
and also some people just work better together. Certainly fracus and Darwin are fully capable of going at it solo, and they have. But I think they just work so well together they make some pretty amazing sets.

I don't think I've used the word 'dosh' since the 90s!

I don't think I've actually ever seen him live, but I've listened to a few of his sets that he's put up on SoundCloud and I was actually really impressed with the range of random stuff he played. I'll try dig out a link as an example tomorrow.
