Relatively speaking, Hardcore has never been massively about having lots of bass. The driving factor behind the genre has always been the kick drum, and for the past decade or so, kick-drums have become more punchy.

This is in comparison with tracks that use breakbeat loops like Drum & Bass or the modern Future genres (Future House, Future Bass) which are more bassline driven.

Perhaps this gives a little more insight to the production ethos behind the music :)

If you compare Hardcore to D&B it indeed usually lacks the really low frequencies and has less overall bass. As already said hardcore is more about movement and bounciness than a big wall of bass.

Bass is more of a thing in Hardstyle and the offshoots. Back in the 2000s some kids where obsessed with this 'bass heavy music' and couldn't get enough of it!

I think it has to do with mastering for vinyl. Gave it that nice analogue feel. now most stuff is just squashed to the max, digitally.

Vinyl has always had a limitation on bass. Generally you get a more muddy sound from analog music, but there has historically been mastering limitations to vinyl. Basslines in particular are very difficult to master for vinyl as lower frequencies tend to mean a vinyl has a groove that is more likely to throw the needle out.

Thanx for the reminder. Yes, I've read about that phenomenon before.

What I am referring to, though, is the beefy-ness attained through the use of analogue circuitry and not digital harshness related to digital systems. Nowadays, it's more likely that an all digital system will have been used to produce a track, resulting in a clear crisp sound that, when compared to older tracks, it may seem as though the older stuff (vinyl?) is bass heavier.
