Right this is a random post but I have a few questions to ask.
Basically I was just browsing on the internet and came to Nextgen's website, and decided to read the artists' profiles. I came across a DJ called Devastate who I have never heard off to be honest, but I have not been into hardcore for long. Anyway the website said he was from Widnes (my hometown). You may be thinking so what?, but it mentions about his first experiences of Hardcore and that there was a few rave clubs in Widnes in each he attended in the early 90's. What confuses me even more that prior to this i thought that Widnes did not have anything remotely like a rave scene, as we only have one club now, and that plays commercial dance and trance.
Anyway the profile could be wrong and I wanna ask if anyone has heard of the clubs, Club 4 and The Landmark? (They were mentioned in the profile) Also does anyone know anything else about devastate, or has anyone ever been raving in Widnes? Or for that matter has anyone even been to Widnes?

DJ Devastate is not only a superb producer and awesome dj with quality scratching skillz but a top guy too boot!!!
Big up Devastate - Wirrals #1
I used to MC for Devastate regularly back in 2000/2001 when I first started out, just before he moved up to Hull... he used to play some brilliant sets alongside DJ Robbie Long... big up's!!!
Most amount of respect for Devastate as he has always been a good friend and helped me no end when I first tried making a name for myself... I would never have got to MC @ Slammin Vinyl, United Dance, Hardcore Heaven & Raindance @ such an early point in my career!!!!

club 4 was by the old asda and railway station in halebank, the landmark was what everyone called sams place on the road to west bank and spike island.
In the late eighties and early nineties there was club 4, sams place, stories and another club i played at where tank was a bouncer but can't remember the name all playing rave but we all got shut down by the council and any rave was banned in widnes from about 1992. So we continued at Legends in warrington (where i put on my rebirth nights).
Widnes is also mentioned in a number of books stating the birth of rave in the uk, the spike island gig with the stoneroses being the main event in question as there were scores of underground dj set ups there too.
Big mouth promotions put an event on at naughton park in 1991 with the prodigy as headliners but it was a flop as our beloved council made it an alldayer and it had to turn off at mid-night, considering at the time all the widy ravers were at fantazia or the eclipse or such hardly anyone turned up bar a few kids who had seen Charley by the Prodigy on top of the pops.
So you see Widnes was actually a major influence on the northern rave scene in its heyday and still could be if it wasn't for the narrow minded view of our local council. So I left town and made a name for myself elsewhere and have now toured the world and played at pretty much every major event.
cheers

Even though it took 7 months, thanx for the reply and the information. Not surprised the council got involved because they are useless at just about everything.

I am surprised at the fact the council were such shitbags when it came to raves, considering that my council, Halton (which is Widnes & Runcorn) were bumming the fact that Creamfields moved to Halton (not Warrington, what everyone thinks) and the council pushed for it to go ahead even though local residents tried to stop it. Yet again, the local council are just greedy for money at the minute.
Shame is you say that Widnes was a big town for Rave in the early 90s, but the scene is just non-existent now, no shops sell vinyl (of any dance for that matter) that I know of. Its all Scouse House now, basically due to Liverpool being the nearest major city, and I can't stand Scouse House. The only nightclub in the town plays Scouse House every night (Top Of The Town) and the other major nightspot (Vue Bar) plays R'n'B from Now 60 and the occasional 3 year old indie song that no one likes anymore.

Club4 was one of the best clubs in the north, had some of the best nights of my life there. Sams place was not as good, but still ok. Legends in warrington was brilliant, i loved the thursday nights. Add all them to the quad and the state, and we had some of the best clubs in the country on our doorstep.
Very good times.
