I highly recommend the Rokit RP6's.

Decent set of monitors at a reasonable price.

Agreed - more bass on the 8s though! If you're not used to how monitor speakers sound it's worth the extra $$$

That's still damn cheap!

Are they the bi-amped ones though? Having bi-amped monitors makes a big difference.

Guys, the more I listen to my tracks other monitors, and the more I work in other peoples studios the more I realise the importance of 2 things to get good, clear mixes:

1. The room you're working in is quite important.
2. The monitors and they're positioning is quite important.

The room you're trying to work in is important becuase a bad room can make you think you have more/less bass than you actually do. In small rooms, the upper lowend/lower midrange (150Hz up to around 500Hz) is particularly loud and muddy. This is just a fact of life (read up on room modes) and the only real way to treat this is buy actually spending the money on acoustic treatments. Heavy curtains and all that jazz do work, but they're not specifically designed for killing particular frequencies.

Not only is the tone of the room important (that is, the frequency response), but the reverb is also important. You can check this out by clapping loudly and listening to the tails. If its long (I've heard one that sounds like a delay) this isn't cool and should be treated with foam.

Why am I ranting about rooms more than speakers? Because even if you have the best monitors, if they're in a crappy wooden, boxy room, they're response is going compromised which isn't what you want.

2. That fact of the matter is, the amount that you spend with audiogear is directly proportional to the quality of the gear. I hate spending money as much as you guys do, maybe even more so, but you need to spend the money on getting good monitors.

To be honest, I dont really like those Rokits RP6's. But thats me. You're best of getting your favourite CD, going to a huge audio store, and getting them to play it. Close your eyes and listen. You want to hear detail and clarity not just "OMG WICKED BASS".

From what I've experienced dude, take the time out, save up a lot of cash and get a really nice pair. The ones I want are £1000 for the pair!

And just as importantly placing them correctly!

I say the positioning is important because if your speakers are on a hard surface such as on a desk or something, you're going to get an inaccurate response. An example of this would be when you place your monitors on a desk without stands. You're going to get a lot of that upper low end and its not going to sound good. You'd do yourself a favour and get speaker stands and isolation pods.

Um....This is all I can think of, but I hope its good advice and sorta answers your question in a weird convoluted way.

Cheers, some good advice but... I struggle to see anyone parting with this sort of money when they're just starting out and learning the basics :P

Obviously there are loads of speakers better than the Rokit 6's but for this sort of price range they're a good choice. I'll look at spending £1000+ on monitors when I'm ready. Getting a hardware synth first though (and yes I know I wont be able to put it to it's best use without super mega ultra monitors ;)). It's more about the learning for me right now.

I think my room is pretty well sorted from what I've read but going on your advice I may purchase some speaker stands. Currently have mine on a hard wooden desk :S

oops!! This was auto-logined as Sc@r, but I assure, its Orbito Une :)

**********************************

hardware is overrated.

You miscontrued my post though, what I was trying to say was this: save up and actually spend a good amount of money on your monitors. Take the time out and listen to as many pairs as you can.

I wish I did the first time around because I would have ended up getting the £1000 ones first instead of spending more than that on the other pairs that I have now.

I was trying to say, you get what you pay for, and when even if you do go out and get a stupidly expensive pair when you're starting out, its going to do more good than harm even though it will hurt in the pocket.

Aye :) If I had the money I would believe me.

I pretty much just want a hadware synth for the sake of it lol. Want something there to fiddle around with for real... Would be good to take out to parties and do live shit with as well :P
