I think I'm just going to skip out on trying to produce some music. In the end it seems I'm just going to be spending an arm and a leg on a truckload of new equipment and components that likely won't even work right.

Nonsense. Just saying don't spend an arm and a leg on an expensive gaming card - get some cheap stuff to start out with and start saving to increase the quality over time. My first card was a Soundblaster AWE64, followed by an SB Live - both strictly speaking gaming cards, but decent cards were very expensive at the time. I hooked both of these through a hi-fi. Again, not ideal, but it got me through.
My reccomended set up to you is to get the M-Audio card and hook it up to your hi-fi. Then your next purchase once you have enough is some decent studio monitor speakers. That'll get you started with a reasonable set up and you'll be spending less than you originally planned :-)

But in the mean time until I can get some studio speakers, how do I get my current speakers to work with that M-Audio card? An adapter? And would there possibly be any distortion from having the adapter?
Cheers.

you'll be able to get a converter, I wouldn't worry about distortion - it won't be noticeable. At this stage you'll only be making music that sounds musically good. By the time you are past that you will be able to afford (saved up) for some studio monitors and from there you'll be able to get into proper mixdowns of your tunes.

Later today I'll get down to ordering the headphones and the sound card.
But uh... what converter would I need? I know it would be RCA to...?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it looks like your speakers accept rca inputs looking at the back of the sub?

The red is Right Front and the white is Rear Right.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=31700&doy=19m6&C=SO&U=strat15 That may do the trick plugged into your front input - although it will depend on the frequency response of your satellite speakers as you won't have a subwoofer signal - the joys of combining a pro-audio setup with a gamer setup:-) For monitoring bass though you can always rely on your shiny new headphones:-)

the 24/96 doesn't support 5.1 surround sound, it's a music producing card.
m-audio revolution will support 5.1 http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Revolution51-main.html but you'll find most 5.1 cards are for movies & games not for producing.

Its more complicated than that - you need an extra channel on your soundcard to only handle low frequencies. I know you can do 5.1 with the M-Audio Delta 1010LT, but this may be just out of your price range at the mo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829121011 I've just spotted another M-Audio card which does 5.1 which is about $78. It uses the same chip as the Audiophile, but then you have to use 3.5mm jacks again, and it looks every bit like a gamer card with EAX and all that jazz. Maybe it might be worth hanging fire for a short while and getting the 1010LT once you can afford it - any other card that will handle surround that is currently in your budget will be a gamer card that will likely need replacing in the future. The 1010LT will handle your surround, but is also a highly credible pro-audio card. Failing that or you ditch the surround, but if you are into your gaming then I guess this is a no-no.

Actually that's a great find on the 1010LT. Same price an Xonar D2X which I was thinking about getting a few weeks back. How would I go about setting it up with my system? Cheers and thanks for the help so far.

Use the RCA to 3.5mm leads I showed you earlier to connect up.
In the M-Audio control panel there is a page called "bass management" which appears to control how you set up your surround. I don't have mine set up for surround, but as a guesstimate from looking inthe control panel, feed channels 1 and 2 to your front speakers, channels 3 and 4 to centre / sub and 5 & 6 to your rear. Then its a case of setting up your crossover freqs etc in the control panel.
Its a great card - I have one and love it!

Well I'm a tad more strapped for cash than I thought I was, so I just ordered the headphones (the ATH-M50).
I imagine in a few weeks I'll be able to nab that sound card. Thanks for your help guys.

I got the headphones... the sound is absolutely beautiful compared to all the pairs of headphones I've used in my lifetime. ;_;
