You need to use at least two layers. One for the sub bass and another on top with more mid presence. Play around with overdrive and distortion on the top layer too.

Just a tip, adding a 303 acid layer can give it a more grungy sound.

there is many different way to make your bass, it really depends onw aht you're using...
But in most cases i use more than 2 layeres. Usually 3.

TONS of people make a mono sub and couple of stereo detuned sawwy layers...

But if you're meaning thickness, look for hardware rip samples or get a hold of nexus ...

Well, theres tons of history about it, this is what i know, whether its correct or not...

Roland invented a hardware synth called the roland tb-303... it had certain sounding saws and squares and i guess the word acid came about when you arranged accordingly with a filter filtering in and out with some resonance it gave it a squelchy sound, then there were tons of people doing it in late 80's? and tons of genres used this type of sound to varying extents... acid, goa trance, psy trance, even some in some happy hardcore ... and it is used in freeform alot too...

what they mean by an acid line is probably just a sequence of certain types of saw or square waves seqeunced and some filtering work always with resonance added to it...

ill upload soem samples soon maybz but im on dial up hahaha

You will prob' find you need to EQ some of the bass off of any higher layers or you will get lots of phasing on the low end. Using more than two layers is pretty common but some people seem to do it unnecessarily and over crowd a certain frequency. Play it by ear and don't just add 3 or 4 layers because someone told you too. Use 1 if you think it's right for your track. It may be that you're making something that has a riff that is low end heavy and you don't want the bass to be using up all that space.

Trust your ears over taking any method as gospel. ;)

yeah...
and to be honest, i actually dont in corporate a large amount of low end into my bass...

and as you bulby said, you deffo will have to cut some low end off from the other layers (not the sub one), cos as he also said, you wil get low end phasing...

rely on the sub bass for the low end... then focus on getting the mids and hi's right with the other layer(s)

Get the right sound of the synth and you shouldn't "need" to beef it up. You should never need to do that. Get it right from the start!
