Hi everyone.
Recently, I've decided to try and pick myself up a set of decks and start learning how to mix properly. Around three months go, I decided to begin producing my own music.
I was thinking to myself, do other people see DJ'ing as a progression from production, ie, you've made some tunes, get out and play them? I was also wondering if those who have always been into mixing seen production as the natural progression, ie, I want to mix with my own tunes.
What are everyone's views on the subject?

Yeah, I see what you're saying bugbear. I've only ever had a couple of shots at mixing in the past (and I was crap), but I felt a bigger buzz than usual hearing the music. Thats why I'm eager to try and learn to mix.

It depends on the individual.
I started producing before DJing.
I know people that started Djing before producing.
Although i dont know anyone who has started one, and hasnt eventually started the other :)

I started producing at like....at 13 or something on eJay (shudder) and from that i kind of stopped doing anything musical after the age of 16. Finally got some decks at 18, started mixing and now i'm thinking of producing.
So i guess it depends on what you want to do really and past experiences. Now that i'm using other programs like Logic, i've realised how advanced producing can be.
But really, do what ever you feel is fun. I love to mix so i do that more than i try to learn how to produce.

I was DJ'ing for a few years before I started producing. Guess it was a natural progression for me. Just had my own ideas for things I would like to be playing out and it went from there. I still need to learn lots before I can get tracks exactly like I want them though. :( I'm happy I've got to a point where I can at least knock together a tune that is playable though heh.
I know a fair few have been mixing for years now who have never even looked at going into producing though. Lots of people DJ round here but there is only a handful of people who produce.

I started out by mixing first, had a set after sharkey and loved it :) but i felt that i couldnt be real dj without making my own tracks so i took time out for a couple of years to learn how to produce, i think im doin ok i have a few tracks finished and am now planning on gettin bk into the djing scene :)

the best feeling is DJing at a rave, playing your own tracks and seeing the crowd go crazy for them
