It's a type of compression usually used to stop the bass from clashing with the kick, it's always used in electro.

The side chain is part of a compressor (or gate) where an external source is fed to trigger the compression, as oppose to usual means.
Example:
If you have the compressor on a pad/string signal, and feed the kick into the side chain of the compressor, then the kick will cause the pad/string to duck everytime the kick makes a sound. This is obviously very usefull to make things like kicks very clearly defined. Like Starstruck said, you can listen to this effect to a very large extent in Electro, but you can use it alot more subtly than that.
It has become somewhat over used at the moment! As oppose to software compressors, you get side chain inputs on most hardware ones, since the routing is obviously completely different.

If you're using FL, download "Twisted Lemming's Sidekick VST".

I can't see any reason why not but I believe there is a better way to do it in Cubase. Don't use Cubase myself so don't know what that is!

put ur synth/bass into a track on the fl mixer and load a fruity balance into the channel, the get a kick and load it into another channel, into the kicks channel oad a mute and a fruity peak controller. go back to the fruity balance and right cick on the volume knob and select link to controler, then you see a drop down thingy that lets u select the controller, it'll be someting like kick-peak controller-peak, or something like that, so select that then it has a little formula thing which just has "input" it needs to be 1-input-0.2. once uve done that u should be good to go.

that was probly a bunch of gobly gook aye, sorry, but it works for me
