M-Audio has shit drivers for their FireWire cards but their PCI cards are pretty solid.

And on topic, i use a Creative X-Fi.
If you have the budget, go for a MOTU Ultralite. Best soundcard for your money.

What? Why would a beginner need a motu ultralite? Unless you're using a lot of hardware and do a lot of recording all those outputs are going to waste.
Its not good bang for the buck if you don't use 90% of the features, especially considering how much it costs.
Much better of spending the money on room treatment, studio monitors or a faster pc.

Is it reasonable to use XLR cables (microphone so to speak - as advertised) as balanced speaker cable?

I use a MOTU Ultralite. It's definately not cheap but a great bang for the buck. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner though it's not that complex, it's not THAT easy either. As a correction, even it has a good number on ins/outs, it's also useful for VSTi for it's sound processing and if you do have 1 or 2 external synths. Also it's great for vocals and to add guitar or bass if you want to spice things up. It's on board effects are useful and it's high end sound processing is a must (even for using all VSTi) to get a pro sound.
