so, not to be too deceptive when it comes to the title of this thread, but ive been wanting to talk about this for a while, i had a chat with my wife on it...and she kind of understands where im coming from..but would be nice to hear other DJ's take on it.
Timecoded vinyl...serato..final scratch etc etc
gives me a sinking feeling when i think about it, and still trying to place why i feel this way about it. as an avid collecter of vinyl, its a wierd thing to think..about the fact that if i spent £300 or whatever on a timecoded system, i could in effect save myself thousands of ££..
i dunno...its just really painful to think that i might pay a stupid amount on bunch of old vinyl, which i love...but yet someone else out there is paying less than 1/4 of the price for mp3 versions - or scrap that..could just be filesharing them em and paying absolutly nothing who's to say or proove they havent paid for it...either way they are DJing at a much much lower cost...
i'll be getting a timecode system in a few years time (money wise its still a way off, unless some time of tax rebate miracle happens) and when it arrives, my entire cd collection, alot of which is unmixed will suddenly open up to me for mixing, some pieces that i want on vinyl too..but i guess i have an internal feer that because i can suddenly mix it on my decks it'll take away from how pumped i would have been when it arrived in the mail off ebay...meaning i just wouldnt bother buying it...
then on top of this, there are songs which arent going to get a vinyl release - and its only going to get "worse" more and more songs wont see a vinyl release..
i would really love to throw Jakazids "private universe" in a UK hardcore mix...but thats not going to happen for a few years yet...
so after philosophizing for a few weeks..well more than a few weeks i found a way to come to terms with it (i think)..
basically it involves continuing my collection of older labels - besides theres only a few that i want the entire back catalogue of (Stompin Choonz, Nu Energy, Bonkerz to name a few that just popped into my head, and a few others like NEP and EP) and then anything after ..say 2007 would be a case of MP3's....
then i see people selling off thier own collections on ebay because "ive moved to a mp3 timecoded system" and they are selling em off cheap too....i mean, this whole thing - surely in the end its going to kill the monetry value of vinyl too?

I know the feeling, I too love playing/collecting vinyl, but I'm pretty sure I'll never buy timecoded stuff :P just don't like the idea of queueing songs on a computer
my plan is to eventually buy CD decks, which is basically the same, only I won't have to send stuff through a program and back to play it ^^
more expensive than a timecoded system, but that's my plan ^^ pretty sure I'm paying way too much taxes this year, so hopefully I'll be getting a nice bunch of moneys next years :p

don't know if I'll ever purchase timecoded vinyl...I have cdjs for mp3s and have enough problem feeling like I'm really djing using them

with timecode vinyl, at least you can kind of trick yourself into thinking you're actually spinning something.

get with the times i've been spinning with sertao for years now and it has made my mixes much more creative, cue points, samplers, loops etc. i can get all that on my cdjs but personal prefernce for me is to spin with my 1200's

I know how you feel.
I have the same thing my CDJ but at the moment cost is all that matters, I can't afford vinyl at the moment and I can't afford Timecoded stuff. I only have one CDJ and need another - my mix's are half vinyl half CDJ at the moment. Which is fine but it'll open up a whole new world in the way of mixing. Since I got my CDJ my vinyl collection has virtually stood still. Can't beat the feeling of getting the new/old records out and playing them though.
Anyone can get an MP3 but it takes a lot of time, effort and personal music taste to get a good record collection together.

Yea I see what you mean.
I have a Timecode System, it's very usefull for tracks that aren't released on Vinyl ( yet.. or will never be ). I can aswell play MP3s on my CDJ-800, but I just prefer Turntables and I'm better at it, I don't know why, but I don't manage to mix very well with the CDJ, the idea of slowing down the song by turning the Jogwheel in the anticlockwise direction just seems very strange to me. But I guess that's just a matter of time till it becomes easy for me..  So yeah, most of the time I use my TTs and I can also play tracks that aren't out on vinyl or even released yet, I mix on one TT and the CDJ when I wanna scratch, so the right TT is always free coz I can't scratch with the left hand

The way I see it is like this: If your vinyl were to get stolen, what would you rather have taken? Your irreplaceable vinyl collection that took years and probably hundreds of pounds to build up, or a couple of timecodes that you could buy again for a couple of quid on the internet? This way, you can leave your vinyl at home in a safe place and use the timecodes to DJ at gigs or parties.
Also, there is a way to rip your vinyl collection to MP3 if you want to go fully digital. It'll feel wrong for a while, but you will get used to it. It's also much more convenient.

You shouldn't be bothered about paying for vinyl just because everyone else is cheap and dosn't want to. You love the music you listen to enough to buy vinyl and they don't, that's their loss not yours. Forget about what everyone else does and continue to use vinyl if that's why you love doing, you don't have to go for the cheaper less valuable obtion just because it's there and everyone else is using it.

never used timcoded.. probably never will.. if i were to bother going 100% digital i'd invest in some pioneer CDJ's but i think thats pointless, if you can mix perfectly seamless on vinyl your as good as going to kick ball sack when your doing a set somewhere on CDJ's!

i have both triquatra :) gotta say its nice to have the actually vinyl even if its only for the bragging rights.. but now im a lil short on cash its quite nice to have scratch live ... i can just go to http://www.hardtunes.com/ and get any nice mp3 i want and play it out still aving a lil bit of vinyl feeling :) i love it =] imho its a good buy ;) u wont regret

I use timecode vinyl/cd in my bedroom, and its a God sent for trying out new playlists and mixes. Once I have a set of tracks that I know are good, I transfer them to my usb sticks to use with my cdj-400s and head out to my set with that. I also burn some cds of the set just in case something messes up with my sticks.
I would never ever use timecode to play live, but for bedroom use its fantastic.
