I refuse to use nexus or vengeance samples. Yuck, romplers are cheap and nasty.
For most of my hardcore leads, I use Reaktor or the Virus Powercore. I also use the Powercore01 for some of my basses.
Abused 909's for rides and hihats, though I'm making a new kit shaped completely out of whitenoise (except for the tonal things like cowbells, rimshots and kick drums).
There is no 'best', only what fits in the context of the song you're working with. I find V-station very thin and digital, but with some elbow grease, you can get some analogue basses out of it.

Samples, limited use of Nexus, V-station, Predator, Purity for Piano's, Sytrus, Sylenth1, Silverbox for acid lines plus a few other bits and bobs.

There's hope for me yet. I cant stand the idea of using VEC or Nexus. At least there's one big name who feels the same.
For kicks Sylent1. For leads, basses, pads, few other bits and pieces (like closed hats and the odd effect) sylenth1. Love that thing.

Because you learn more and requires more skill?
What happens when you're plonked in a studio where you don't have nexus or your regular samples? You need to know the theory on how to get the sounds you want, rather than just having a menu of premade sounds.
If production is like cooking a meal, Nexus/Vengeance is like going to get MacDonalds.

Hey,
I only really use Vengeance for some FX, but i've been making my own lately. Also use vengeance osmetimes for open hat layers.. But i've actually been making myown sample pack, processed 909 percussion, other samples, layered processed, compressed, eq, whatever. By making i don't mean from scratch. However i've been learning about that, i.e, mucking about with white noise and ADSR..
It just doesnt seem the right way to produce if you're going to sample anything, there is no knowledge behind sampling leads, like Nexus. You just click on it, and throw it out. Nexus is popular as layers though because they're thick sounds. But just on it's own sounds nasty and amateur imo.
