all you need these days is a computer with a decent soundcard (I reccomend audiophile 192. And a (optional) midi keyboard

popular sequencers are:
Reason3
Cubase
Logic
Fruityloops
Orion
Renoise
Madtracker

then you need VSTi's. VST effects and .wav samples. You can get samples on internet, you don't need to buy CDs.

reason is a good choice of sequencer as its stand-alone and u dont need any VSTi's for it, which has both pro's and cons

i'm using cubase and i no a LOT of other producers use the same thing, simply coz its so powerful!

as to record a vocal, i'm not too sure what sort of software u'd need... maybe something like soundforge?

as to a decent computer to run it all, i suggest the best one u can afford. something dual core with 2+GB of ram would be pretty sweet. i plan on gettin something like this very soon, coz even tho i'm still only just learning how to produce these few months, i've come to a point where i need to bounce out parts of tunes as audio as my comp cant run all the processed sounds in real-time.

synths u can find all over the place and it really is ALL over the place! u pay pay hundreds of dollars for soft synths u dont even like, yet find ur favourite one is freeware.

You can record a vocal using cubase. It is an audio and MIDI multitrack recorder. You just need a soundcard that supports audio input

i would go for fruity loops 7 if your just starting out, cubase imo would be too hard to get to grips with if you have no experience with sequencers, once you master fruity loops or find fruity is holding you back make the move to cubase or sonar

as for recording accapella's, audicity is a freeware audio program that records, edits wav files mp3 etc top tool & free in the bargain

i disagree with the previous...

start with the best and youll never look back,

the best being Cubase (imo)

Cubase (w or w\o) Reason is an unstoppable force :)

Yes I agree. Started on Cubase and never looked back. I look at fruity and just think...'No!!!'

It doesn't have as much freedom over audio and MIDI like cubase does. It's such a powerful tool I'd recommend it to everyone, new or not. You're gonna have to learn the ins and outs of fruity before you can make full use of it...Why not just learn the ins and outs of cubase.

I disagree , Fruity is actually a lot more powerful than ppl give it credit for. Having used Cubase and Reason I went back to Fruity purely for the ease of it. It makes life so much easier than the other two.

If someone was to tell me that you can only make good sounding music on Cubase or Reason (Which they have) id tell them to stick it. Fruity, even Magix Music Maker is capable of making some killer sounds. Its not so much the application thats going to make the track sound good, its the person using it.

yeah fair enough, but different sequencers have different sound engines, and cubase is superior to fruity. I'm not sayin in anyway that Cubase makes your music sound better.

And as for ease of use. It's only cause you are used to FL. Everyone has their preferance. Depends on what you learn on first dont it?

I wouldnt say Cubase's sound engine is any more powerful than fruity's. They both use the same decoders. All PC driven software is confined to the same set of parameters.

I learnt both Cubase and Fruity, I chose to stick with Fruity as Cubase was more fussy.

Its a personal preference, but not 1 piece of software is better than the other, its what you want to use.

most people seem to ASSUME i use cubase when really i use fl studio... so cubase cant have that much of a better sound engine can it?

like someone said before (and it goes with all equipment/software) no sequencer is better than another; it comes down to the skill of the producer using it.

I use fruity as well, there is really nothing wrong with the sound engine. It recieved an overhaul for version 7 as well.

Spot on.

What generally makes a track sound decent is how well you pick your sounds, use your FXs (reverb, compression, EQ etc), panning and making use of the full width and frequency range, not whether you use Cubase, Reason, Logic or Fruity...
