get a cheepo begginer package to start with to see if you actually want to do it, thats all you should need to start off with the kits come with everything you need, most people start on not-so-great decks - it helps to hone your skills - gives you some background before you start using better/more expensive decks.

also if it doesnt work out you can quit whilst your ahead money wise.
best to buy cheeper decks at the start and spend the rest of the money on vinyl

numark have some good packages to start out with that will have everything you need (but vinyl)

http://www.decks.co.uk/articles/numark_tt1650_packages_homepage

always nice to buy new first insted of second hand so you know exactly what your getting.
it doesnt have to be numarks starter packages, the only reason i say them is because alot alot of people seem to go for them when starting out - and i know alot of people who are still doing radio shows online are still using them...so they can be THAT bad

look for used, look for technics.

at the very least, look for something that's direct drive. belt drive SUCK, you'll be wanting to upgrade shortly if you buy them, i promise you that...

which reminds me, the only thing i would add/change to my post is that whatever you go for its still a good idea to buy direct drive they will last longer and for useabiltys sake.
i'll stick by my guns though, dont bother buying high end technics/numarks/vestax/stanton just yet - get the DD starter pack and a shag load of vinyl

it's direct drive, so it meets the status quo.

however, i owned numarks before and they feel like toys in comparison to something like technics.

numarks are really plasticky and hollow. they just look okay.

my suggestion: go on craigslist or kijiji, keep on the look out for someone selling their shit.

not only will you get a deal because it's used, you'll probalby be able to buy vinyl with the money left over.

really. it's the best way to go. brand new is for people who have a shit load of money.

i think you had us fooled with how it says virgin islands under your name ;)

good online shops are,

http://www.shop.happyhardcore.com
http://www.hardbeatstore.com

you won't have much luck finding hardcore or happy hardcore stateside.

as for turntables, most deff look into getting direct drive decks for sure. stanton makes a solid beginner direct drive turntable that won't break the bank that comes with a mixer and headphones called "scratch pak" and it will get you on the way.

once you wish to upgrade sell the lot and save up for technics sl1200 mk2's or mk5's because if you begin playing at raves or clubs, that will be the type of turntable used. it's like night and day how they work compared to any other turntable on the market.

oh yeah, and when you buy vinyl from other countries be sure to factor in the exchange rate and higher shipping cost as well.

Oh wow, thanks all of you, this helped a lot!

One last question

I read somewhere that you needed 2 of each vinyl, or something, is this true?

depends on if you want two copies of the same record. i just learned by trying to mix different records and listening to other peoples mixtapes and cds to see how they did it.

only reasons I could see someone wanting 2 copies of something is if 1) they intend to juggle or 2) they keep one copy for playing & one copy for collecting.

as stated, you need atleast direct drives. invest more money in the turntables than the mixer as you can upgrade mixers much easier as you start to realize what you want from them.

I personally would recommend getting technic 12s, numark ttxs, or vestax pdxs if you're wanting to spin vinyl.

other vinyl stores:
imorecords.com
juno.co.uk
